I cannot stand the hipsters and fashionistas of New York City. Rather, I can’t stand the phenomenon of normal, smalltown people moving to New York and then pretending they are the coolest New Yorkers to ever glide down Fifth Avenue. They move to New York from small-town USA, cast off their hometown ways, start dressing in all black and try to be the hippest New Yorker on the island. Argh.
Dealing with these clowns is most exasperating. Each person is vying to be the coolest/most stunning/most cutting edge. It must be exhausting for them to keep up the pretenses! Why not just be yourself? It’s okay that you’re Eleanor from Smalltown, USA. Just because you moved to New York you don’t have to be ‘Elle’ from the Upper East Side–omnipotent guru of “The City”. Sheesh. Stop pretending you were born here and know everything there is to know about New York. Don’t be such a snob–you’re from Palooka, Kansas for Christ’s sake!
Does this phenomenon happen in other metropolitan cities?

This happens in Chicago all the time, although it happens more often when southern Illinoisans come into the city acting like they’re a chi-town gangsta or something when they’re really from a former mining town like Carbondale. You never really hear about people coming into Chicago acting like they were raised here though. I suspect that occurs more in NYC since you guys are way more popular than we are.
