I’m at my “Friday Job”* today, up to my eyeballs in wedding registries and bridal promotions. All the wedding stuff sent me into a rainy-day reverie about my wedding and our “First Dance” song.
Our song–a bit tongue in cheek because it took us 8 years to tie the knot–was At Last by Etta James. When my sister was planning her wedding, I suggested I Only Have Eyes For You since they didn’t have a specific song in mind, and she went with it.
So, how about you? Do you and your spouse/partner/pet have a special song or wedding song? Spill!!
*Friday Job: I’ve been working for a china and crystal company (think Lenox and the like) every summer and on Fridays for 8 years.

Good thing you didn’t choose one of Etta James’ other hits, “Stop the Wedding”!
Ours is ‘Night and Day’ by Frank Sinatra. Unfortunately, when we talked to the DJ and tried to give him our CD, he said, ‘Oh, I have that’. Well, when it was time for our dance, he played his CD, and it was a very SLOW version… ours was more big band and upbeat. Damn it! Of course I couldn’t stop him and say, ‘hang on, let me get mine out of my car’. Oh well… we danced, but not how we wanted to.
@ Pan: or etta’s all i could do was cry! hahahah
@ Jen: grr! our dj did that with my father/daughter dance–he played the extended version of stevie wonder’s isn’t she lovely–6 long minutes of my dad steering me around in circles.
When I married the comic book writer years ago, he chose “Baby I Love You” — the Ramones version! Everyone laughed, and then laughed again when my mother requested that the DJ follow it with the original version from the 60s so that the “old people could dance, too”.
Best wedding song story I know happened at the wedding of friends of mine: the bride wrote a wonderful letter to PDQ Bach (aka Professor Peter Schickele) asking if she could commission a song for her husband as a wedding present. He wrote them a personalized “wedding song” for free and it was debuted by professional singers at the reception to the amazement of the groom!
I joke with my fiance that if he’s not nice our wedding song will be that song that goes
What did I
What did I
What did I do to deserve this?
Hehehe…we’re kind of silly like that though.
I think our wedding song will be Everything by Michael Buble.
“True Companion” by Marc Cohn, one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Ours was *Let’s Get It On* by the magnificent Marvin Gaye.
*raises eyebrow at Dishy’s song*
Ours is Anything for you by Gloria Estefan.
He bought me the album when he was away on an ‘all boys booze up’. I was impressed that he stayed sober enough to think of me!
I walked down the isle to Norah Jones’ “Come Away With Me” and our first kiss as husband & wife on the alter was Harry Connick Jr.’s “It Had To Be You”.
My husband and I were married in Las Vegas at the Little White Wedding Chapel. Yep, the infamous site of both the Britney Spears debacle and the first drive-thru wedding. Our song is “Fools Rush In”, which our Elvis impersonator serenaded us with after we said the I dos. I still get a little teary eyed whenever I hear it today. If teary eyed means bawling like a baby.
