ICE CREAM!!!
Is there a better food group on the planet? I’d wager that there isn’t. But, true to form, I’m persnickety about my ice cream flavors, textures, toppings, and cones.
There are certain hard and fast rules that I abide by when eating ice cream and I want to know if you follow your own set of unwritten laws. Here are mine…feel free to editorialize or add your own rules.
Ice Cream Laws
1. Soft-serve ice cream can only be eaten from a wafer (yellowish) cone or a cup.
2. Sprinkles are NOT to be referred to as ’Jimmies’. Ever. And those stupid chocolate sprinkles should just crawl away because no one likes them. They look like bugs.
3. Hard ice cream can only be eaten from a sugar cone (the one that looks like a pointy witch’s hat) or a cup.
4. Sherbet should be outlawed unless it’s being served in punch at my annual Halloween party. And the name annoys me too. Is it Sher-Bit or Sher-Burt? Whatever your name, just go away already.
5. Gummi Bears are not an acceptable ice cream topping.
Ice Cream Parlor Picks
A. Soft vanilla with rainbow sprinkles.
B. Butter pecan
C. Soft vanilla cone dipped in the chocolate stuff that turns into a faux-tasting chocolaty shell.
D. Soft vanilla with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (Tier 1 candy, to be sure) mixed in. (AKA a Blizzard/Blender, et al.)
Grocery Store Picks
I. Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia
II. Breyer’s Butter Almond or Butter Pecan
III. Mint Chocolate Chip (but it has to be GREEN in color)
So, what’s your fancy? Are you a chocolate kind of person? Or do you prefer Rocky Road? Heavenly Hash? Or is Tin Roof more your style?

I’ve only one rule when it comes to ice-cream:
1. Chocolate inside, chocolate outside!
=D
I am a fan of the twist soft ice cream with vanilla and chocolate!
I HATE when people call sprinkles ‘jimmies’, it just feels wrong and dirty… ew.
As far as ice cream goes, my favorite from the store is either the orange and vanilla combo or peanut butter cup; depending what end of the month it is.
And at the ice cream stand, the same rules abide as when I go out to eat, if I can make it at home, I am not ordering it. I opt for the “blizzard” with nerds or heath bars, though they both hurt my teeth. If I’m going for hard ice cream, PB cup is awesome and so is Fireball (cinnamon upon cinnamon upon cinnamon).
I took my dog out for ice cream last week and she liked the vanilla soft serve and then wanted to eat my blizzard, to which I put the kabosh on.
I feel very strongly about ice cream. You have seen my shopping list, no?
My thoughts and comments, which are by no means exhaustive:
· soft ice cream doesn’t deserve anything better than the bleached, aerated cardboard concoction called a wafer cone.
· sherbet comes from Turkish and Persian sherbet, meaning “drink.” The original version is essentially an -ade made from fruit juice and water, often chilled with snow (I guess at higher elevations). When the Europeans got their hands on it, they adapted it as an effervescent powder. Whatever. As far as I’m concerned, the one acceptable flavor is “rainbow” and that should be used for entertainment purposes only.
· ice creams are like cocktails; a good one never has more than three ingredients.
· let the hoagie-grinder-pop people call them jimmies if they like. Chocolate is fine. I like ants anyway.
· green ice creams: none. This includes, mint, pistachio and green tea.
· coffee and chocolate are my favorites. I love coffee ice cream, but paradoxically I wouldn’t be caught dead putting sugar or milk in my drinking coffee.
Addendum: the best ice cream I’ve ever had was fresh-made cinnamon in Hanoi. 1998.
I like fudge brownies and almonds and chocolate sauce and peanuts and cookie dough and marshmallows and chocolate covered nuts in mine. YUM.
Okay, I wasn’t clear. I like mint, pistachio, and green tea ice cream, I just don’t think they should be “green.” Sherbet is fruit juice and sugar.
Ginger ice cream is a wonderful thing.

pan…nah, i like having more than 2 comments…even if they are all you editing yourself. lol.
Rocky Road is my longtime favorite, though Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia and now in the top 3 as well. Yum!
I LOVE Mint Chocolate Chip, hands down my favorite. They also have the most amazing flavor of gelato in Ialy called menta. It is Mint Chocolate Chip and it taste even better (if that is possible)!!!
Cookies & Cream in the house! Oh come on people. Everyone knows Cookies & Cream is the best damned ice cream in the world. It’s a very well know, clearly documented fact. As for Jimmies (Jimmy’s?) or sprinkles or whatever you want to call them, NEVER, NO WAY, NO HOW, anywhere near my ice cream. That last part is purely opinion, and a very strong one at that, but the Cookies & Cream supreme status is the real deal.
oh, peter…i was waiting for someone to check in from the cookies n’ cream camp. i DETEST oreos and think they should be illegal. why would a person eat a cookie that tastes like dirt? but, hey…that’s just my opinion. :*
I totally forgot that I used to buy Ben & Jerry’s Rainforest Crunch, but then they stopped making it and I remembered that I forgot about it.
Damn you….your killing me here. Because I’m without job (thanks to this lovely market) I can’t afford any “non-essential” food. Mostly because I’ve got about 20 dollars a month for food….I’ve been hankering for ice cream since May…
CWG says: email me your address. i’m sending you some ice cream.
Sprinkles ARE JIMMIES DAMMIT!! You people are obviously NOT from Philly. You say sprinkles here and you buncha pansies are gonna get yer asses kicked BIG TIME.
By the by – we say hoagies. NOT grinders. NOT subs.
ALSO NOT POP. It’s soda from the ACK-A-ME. Better yet, a glass a wooder will do yous good.
NOW THAT THAT”S SETTLED.
I like Bassett’s ice cream the best. vanilla. peach. pumpkin.
I like the soft yogurt cones from IKEA which only cost $1.
When I was pregnant w/Maddie I ate a pint of Ben & Jerry’s every day. It’s no wonder I gained 50 lbs w/her. Thank God it came off.
There is no better food than ice cream. except maybe yogurt.
The end.
CWG says:*fingers in ears* la la la la…i don’t HEAR you and your freaky JIMMIES word. sprinkles. sprinkles. sprinkles. you SPRINKLE them over the ice cream…get it? you don’t JIMMY them over the ice cream. :b hahahahh
What about custard….it is way better then ANY ice cream!!!
oh, stop. you’re such a west-consin freak. lol. xoxo
I have to agree with my sister on this one . . . frozen custard outshines any bland, oops, brand of ice cream. Since we’re talking about Ben Jerry’s, what about “Chubby Hubby”? How can you beat the trifecta of chocolate-covered, peanut butter-stuffed pretzels in chocolate-swirled vanilla ice cream? But I will give props to Cherry Garcia; it’s a close second.
CWG says: i just love the word trifecta. let’s all use it more often. and as for custard…yes, it’s good. i’ve had it…but it makes me thirsty. lol.
Mint choc, mint choc, mint choc…..day after day after day. I feel I am hooked!
CWG says: clearly, you must be.
i’m a fan, myself.
Where in the world can i find fireball ice cream around mass.
[...] confession) As much as I love books, I love ice cream, too. Curlywurlygirly talked about this over here, but I had more to say than I cared to type in the comment box. So I’m making a post of it [...]
