Let’s veer sharply from the ‘birthday’ theme and talk celebrities. Specifically, let’s discuss ”Free Range Celebrity Spotting”–seeing or speaking with celebrities outside of their natural habitat.
Seeing movie stars at an awards show or singers at a concert doesn’t count–I’m talking spotting Donny Osmond wearing a deer-stalker hat at the Whole Foods Market.
To be honest, I’m not much of a celebrity watcher–I don’t have television over here at my little Amish beach house and don’t keep up with People and OK! magazines. Nonetheless, celebrity spotting can be fun!
In my almost-34 years, I’ve done pretty poorly with my ‘Free Range Celebrity Spotting.’ I’ve seen Derek Jeter and the Yankees up close at spring training in Florida, but that doesn’t count–they were playing baseball. Let’s talk about which celebrities we’ve seen ”in the wild”.
Here’s my weak showing in no particular order:
- Barry Williams (Greg Brady from the Brady Bunch) at a hotel in Wisconsin on last year’s road trip–he hid out from rabid fans in the elevator lobby with us.
- The host from the old kid’s game show Double Dare–his name was Marc something or other. He was poking around a record store in The Village when I espied him with my little eye.
- Nile Rogers from the band Chic was getting his car from the same parking garage as me in the city one day. I went up to him and said, “Um hi. Are you Nile Rogers?” and he looked down at me, smiled and said, “Yep.” And then I had no clue what to say, so I scampered back to my place in line. I’m a dork. I know.
- While traveling with my family in Italy, the woman who played the mom on the tv show Mr. Belvedere was in our tour group.
Pathetic list–especially for someone who visits New York City frequently! But it’s not like celebrities congregate on the streets in Manhattan. It’s kind of like waiting for deer to show up in my parents’ back yard–you know they live out in the woods, but they don’t always come out when I’m visiting. My parents see them waaaay more than I do–just like New York residents must spot celebrities waaay more than I do.
What about you? Have you spotted any celebrities ‘in the wild’?? If so, where? Did you speak to them? Snap a picture?

hmmm well I have but just as your list means nothing to me, mine would mean nothing to you I’m afraid.
I once saw Bruce Willis in a lift and he took all of his clothes off…then mine…
oh *blushes* silly me! That wasn’t real! It was dream! ;o)
CWG says: daffy, you don’t know THE BRADY BUNCH?! c’mon! even i know some english shows and i don’t even have tv! like the one that takes place in the department store with the blue haired lady and the mincing little man…my grandfather loved that program.
I have seen a surprising number of celebrities in Ottawa, but then, they’re from Ottawa so I guess it’s not that surprising. I saw Alanis Morisette at my fav vegetarian restaurant The Table once. She was pretty – it was during her short hair phase, which I think she looked better. She still spends a lot of time here, so seeing her wasn’t much of a surprise.
My parents were visiting once and we ran into (literally) the Dali Lama and Matthew Perry in the same day. My parents were completely blown away!! They weren’t together! LOL!! The Dali Lama was at the airport and stopped to chat with them; later that day we were downtown we were stopped at a cross walk. I dropped my umbrella and hit Matthew Perry
He looked annoyed! Oops!
My absolute favourite celebrity spotting was Angelina Jolie. It was a complete surprise, and I was blown away. I was in Montreal, walking back to my car, which was parked at the Royal Victoria Hospital. They were filming a movie there called Taking Lives – I hadn’t heard of it. Then Angelina walked out of a trailer with another girl and started walking down the street. She was unlike anything I expected. She was wearing a white t-shirt and kakis – not the Laura Croft outfit!!! She was skinnier than I expected, and much shorter than I expected (again, I think I was expecting a tomb raider kind of person.) She’s the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in person. Ever.
I met Van Morrison once as well, but it was a very long time ago. At the time I only knew Brown Eyed Girl. Now he’s one of my favs…it was a wasted opportunity
Wow! Okay, so that’s a few. I didn’t realize that I’ve been that lucky!
I guess you have to come to Ottawa to see the good ones!! LOL!!
CWG says: wow! ottawa is happening! i had no idea. i’ll have to visit to see some celebs!
Daffy…you are too funneee!!! Archie Bell of Archie Bell and the Drells, most popular song “Tighten Up” was in my father’s platoon in Kaiserslautern, Germany. We saw him at family functions and he played music at the NCO club. I know this is a pretty weak showing.
CWG says: ARCHIE BELL!!!!!!! i love him! “tighten up” is great! ‘hi everybody…i’m archie bell of the drells from houston texas…and we don’t only sing…but we dance just as good as we walk!” connie…so neat!!!!
Lance Bass of N’Sync. He was kind of an asshat.
Chris has seen:
1. Demi Moore
2. Bruce Willis
3. Mary Kate Olsen
4. Ashley Olsen
5. Gary Senise
6. Michael Jordon
7. Janet Jackson
8. Cher
9. Dick Cheney
10. The Beach Boys
11. Christina Aguilera
12. Gilbert Gottfried (voice of Iago in Aladdin)
13. random NBA and NFL people who I wouldn’t know anyway
14. Ahmad Rashad (married to Phylicia Rashad) another sports person
15. Liza Minelli
14. and others he can’t remember
Out of everyone he said that Liza was the nicest, but probably because she had been drinking. Out of all the SOBER people, he said that Demi Moore and Bruce Willis were the nicest, and most down-to-earth. He also had very nice things to say about Gary Senise.
I bumped into Conway Twitty at the Nashville Airport when I was about 7 or 8. I was running. Wasn’t supposed to. Got in trouble. Not by Conway. He was very nice. By my Mom – one very apologetic country music fan. My one lone brush with fame…….
i saw danny devito and rhea pearlman at this nuts and fruit store near palm springs. they had their kids with them. i think they stopped to go to the bathroom like we did. my sister went up and got his autograph. but i was too shy and embarassed.
once my friend and i thought we saw stevie wonder on the freeway in san diego. they passed us in the opposite direction getting on the freeway. we turned around and followed them to see if it was him. surprisingly, it was not.
I never saw the Brady Bunch… *sob* My dad made us watch Grandstand and Doctor Who and Monkey Magic… did you ever meet anyone from Monkey Magic? That would be way cool!
.
Are you being Served! Fantastic, Mrs Slocombe and her pussy! It was actually far more rude than people thought, it was just cleverly done.
.
I have one for you… it’s from my George though not me…
My dad shared a flat in London for a very short time with Harry Webb! Who? Cliff Richard!
He says that he was a big headed know it all and he wouldn’t go and see him even if he played in my dads back yard. (Which is unlikely)
@hayden: wow…hubster gets around..did he work somewhere that celebs frequented? as for your showing…lance? almost as bad as greg brady. lol.
@lori: that’ll teach ya to run in airports! i’ll be in nashville in a few days…maybe i’ll run into conway twitty too. or is he no longer with us? i’m a bit fuzzy on c&w musicians.
@mariah: your sis is so nervy! i love it! i would have probably said something…but then just ran away like the doofus i am.
@daffy: that is very sad about not seeing the brady bunch. almost as bad as not having lucky charms cereal.
the humor and bawdiness of are you being served was totally lost on me. i just got nervous because i felt like they were speaking a foreign language. duh.
I met Princess Anne at the Kiribati independance day ceremony when I was there during my Navy days
I met Ernie Dingo, an Australian TV celebrity, at an auto spares shop & he was a real snob when I went & said g’day to him.
I could do a bigger list of who I haven’t met
CWG says: hmmm..celebrities who we haven’t met…now there’s an idea!
my list would be quite large!
Curl, he worked at Disney.
Wait, you mean celebrities are real people too?
I am from Ottawa originaly but moved west to Vancouver several years ago. While living and working on the west coast I was forntunate enough to bump into the likes of Elton John, Rod Stewart (bumped into), Pam Grier, J. Lo, Halle Berry(sweet as can be), Rip Taylor(Very nice man),Tommy Chong,Will from Will and Grace,Bryan Adams,Jason Patrick, Jean Claude VanDame(idiot-very short), The Urban Chef guy, Nelly Fertado(my roomates friend, partied at our apartment)etc.,etc. To say the least Vancouver is a hot-bed for celebrity sightings and meetings, most are just like you and I.
