What the color of your car says about YOU.
July 29, 2008 by curlywurlygurly
There are people in this world who devote their time and energy to researching how a vehicle’s color reveals its owner’s personality traits. If that wasn’t bad enough, then there are people who dedicate an entire blog post to testing the vehicle color theory.
So, let’s get to it. The descriptions are courtesy of Leatrice Eiseman, author of The Color Answer Book.
- Silver: Elegant, loves futuristic looks, cool
- White: Fastidious
- Vibrant Red: Sexy, speedy, high-energy and dynamic
- Light to Mid-Blue: Cool, calm, faithful, quiet
- Dark Blue: Credible, confident, dependable
- Taupe/Light Brown: Timeless, basic and simple tastes
- Black: Empowered, not easily manipulated, loves elegance, appreciates classics
- Neutral Gray: Sober, corporate, practical, pragmatic
|
- Dark Green: Traditional, trustworthy, well-balanced
- Bright Yellow-Green: Trendy, whimsical, lively
- Yellow Gold: Intelligent, warm, loves comfort and will pay for it
- Sunshine Yellow: Sunny disposition, joyful and young at heart
- Deep Brown: Down-to-earth, no-nonsense
- Orange: Fun loving, talkative, fickle and trendy
- Deep Purple: Creative, individualistic, original

Allow me to be the first person to poo-poo Eiseman’s findings. I purchased a red car not because of my inante sexiness and dynamic personality (thought I have both qualities in abundance), but rather as an accident deterrent. I drive a small car–a Honda Fit–and picked red so everyone who pays attention while driving will see me motoring up the road.
How about you? What color is your car and does it match the ‘color/personality’ chart?

my car is silver, and that description fits me to a t.
CWG says: well, thanks for stepping all over my theory that this study is malarky! lol.
These are the only colors I would ever drive…
This is what I have now, though someone gave me this car. Dark Blue: Credible, confident, dependable [True.]
Otherwise I would pick black first, then silver.
Black: Empowered, not easily manipulated, loves elegance, appreciates classics [TRUE]
Silver: Elegant, loves futuristic looks, cool [True.]
CWG says: what if i gave you a pink car? would you drive it?
I have a white car, to keep cool and the other is pewter…go figure.
Fastidious…umm maybe a tiny bit but no I don’t agree with this.
CWG says: me neither…
When I first started driving, I had mom’s red car. A Chevette! Remember those?! Then I had a blue car followed by a beigey kind of yellowish car. Now it’s silver.
Thinking back at those times, none of the descriptions matched me–probably b’c they were used cars my dad bought us. Silver, though, is pretty spot on… and I bought it myself.
CWG says: your mom had a ‘vette?!!? wow!
i’m partial to silver cars myself..must be my cool elegance shining through.
i drive a white car…not because i wanted a white car but because when i went to buy a USED car it was the right price (my main consideration). i’m not even sure what fastidious means exactly but it doesn’t sound very positive. so i’m gonna say it misses the mark!
CWG says: it just means super-clean! i’m with you on the bargain train…most of the time.
My car is pearl. I don’t see pearl up there. Let me make up my own description:
Very good looking, funny, and warm hearted
Wow! That fits me perfect! These color charts always peg me right on!
CWG says: oh, hey! don’t forget MODEST. lol.
A beautiful midnight blue that matches my eyes! I am dependable. I don’t know how credible after the whole German fiasco!!!
CWG says: did i miss the german fiasco?
midnight blue sounds pretty…does it get really hot in the summer (because it’s a dark color?)
BLACK all the way, baby.
CWG says: like i would expect anything less?
I bet Ms. Eiseman also writes horoscopes. I haven’t seen The Color Answer Book, so I can’t say much about it. I have however perused Michele Bernhardt’s well-designed and entertaining
Colorstrology.CWG says: yes, and i think she moonlights writing fortunes for those little chinese cookies!!!
What about those of us whom have bought used cars. We were not able to pick colors but rather what was available with what we wanted. In the past 6 years we have traded in 3 cars to get the mini-van we wanted (still used) It is silver but the past cars were red, white and gray-blue. So does my silver car match my personality. I don’t know if I am elegant or cool….
CWG says: listen, sister. i’m not over here toolin’ in a brand new lexus…i drive my cars until they wheeze their last breath…i put almost 200,000 miles on my last car–we try to keep our cars for 8-10 years or 200K miles–whichever comes first.
stop implying that i live in the lap o’ luxury over here at chez curlywurly. hee hee.
Ms. Eiseman gets to laugh all the way to the bank by spouting the obvious mixed in with general “horoscopy” descriptions…not too helpful.
Some alternatives:
Silver – Choice for the lazy as it hides dirt and for the safety conscious as the shine would help prevent accidents.
Brown – Also for the lazy as it doesn’t show dirt. Also for those who are meek as they want to blend in.
Red – Choice for those who want to stand out and live dangerously as they attract cops and get ticketed often.
Blue – Choice for the wistful (for the sky) or vain (to match their eyes).
And those are just some quick examples! Take THAT, Ms Eiseman!
CWG says: well, i actually picked red for my car because it reminded me of my homeland–hades. i don’t think that people who match their cars to their eye color are vain–maybe they don’t want to clash! i almost didn’t buy the red car because it didn’t match (or compliment) the color of my house. (instead, i just painted my house and bought the red car).
I have a white car but I also bought it for the car not the color. It was used and I didn’t have a choice. As for fastidious…. I don’t think so!
CWG says: if i had a white car i would be constantly driving through the car wash. it’s just me. that’s why i’ll never own a white car.
My husband LOVES red. I love black or white. We tend to take turns choosing the color. Last truck was black. This one is red. I drive a white van. See a pattern? lol
the art of compromise is alive and well on the funny farm!
This is great! We drive a ‘76 orange truck lovingly dubbed “Punkin”. I would say that is right on for us! Except for the trendy part. Ugh…trendy.
CWG says: maybe you’re unintentionally trendy by driving an orange truck? like you’re a hipster? lol.
I drive a bright blue, convertible sports coup. Cool Calm Faithful and Quiet have never ever been used in the same sentence as my name!
CWG says: bright blue convertible? i’d peg you as a go-getter, very vivacious and happy-go-lucky. maybe i’ll write my OWN book about car colors.
I have a black car. I have to say, its fitting the description!
CWG says: the black car description is the best one. i’m tempted to say i have a black car just so everyone thinks i’m cool…but i already admitted to having a red car a few months back. lol.
My car is white but I am the least “fastidious” person I have even known. And I’ve known me a long time so I know that it’s true.
CWG says: so since you don’t keep your white car clean, maybe it’s a better bet to say your car is brown/or beige with dirt? what about those descriptions? do they match you better?
got it
CWG says: really? i’m happy for you.
I’ve always favoured the sandy gold and silverish cars. It seems about right
But I have no issue with a chrome and black look. These descriptions are pretty accurate !
CWG says: that whole ‘champagne’ or sandy-gold color makes me nervous. it seems to be a top choice for the AARP crowd.
The dark grey Volvo was £500 cheaper than the silver….
CWG says: hey! how did you make the ‘pound’ mark?! do english keyboards have a ‘pound’ sign on their number “4″ button instead of a $ ?! this is a legitimate question!!
Hi I am a first time visitor to your blog.
Very fun design and I really love the header and lets eat some candy( I am a candyholic..lol)
My car is a Honda civic and is silver; odd because I DO like elegant things and futuristic designs!
WEIRD!
My husband’s car is white, and YES he is VERY fastidious!!
CWG says: send that husband of yours over to my house–my hubs needs some help organizing the garage.
My car is silver because it was the only color they had in the model I wanted. I would have chosen green, but silver is fine. If that means I’m elegant by default – sweet. I really am just happy to have a car that works well, color be damned.
CWG says: you are the picture of elegance and impatience…hee hee. maybe you could have ordered the green!
There may be some truth to this theory, I have a white car, and SOMETIMES I can be hard to please, I did actually want the red version of my car, but it just didn’t work out that way, which that’s not me, so everything worked out, I guess!
CWG says: hmm..it’s interesting to see so many people didn’t actually get the color car they wanted. sounds like a new post for another day.
I have a silver Galant… and I love sci-fi. Any connection?
However, that must be a subconscious thing because when I chose silver, it was with the understanding that insurance premiums are highest for red and black cars of same class.
CWG says: hmm…i didn’t know the insurance company judged on color–heck, in jersey car inurance is so expensive, what’s a few more bucks for my little red car?!
I guess I’m the odd-man-out when I say that I drive a dark blue-purpleish VW because that’s the color that was already on it in the used car lot.
I like the look and all but I don’t think there is as much personality in car color as Mr. Eiseman would like to think.
CWG says: ahh..dark blue-purple means: practical and willing to make sacrifices to save money and get the car i want.
I don’t drive a red car, but I REALLLLY want a red one
or black.
Hmm, this was fun and interesting to read, thanks!
CWG says: yes, red cars are pretty snappy. i love mine. ps. i put your blog link into the post–so people can just click on your name to see your blog.
I drive a Dark Green Ford Mondeo, But also ride a Black and Red Yamaha R1. Im Confused theres no way i can fit the personalty of Black, Red and Green
BTW on an English Key board the £ sign is on number 3, the $ is still on number 4
CWG says: so then where is the # sign that’s on my number 3? do you not have one?! shall i send you mine?
The associations between color and personality are always fun and color is a great way to express our personalities. Regardless of how deeply personal color when it comes to buying a car unless you are buying something brand new the color usually falls below the condition and price so may not say much about your personality traits.
This is true even for a color professional like me who prefers to go for value over personal expression when it comes to my car. I got lucky and my most recent purchase is a color I love–deep midnight blue–but I probably would have bought the same vehicle even if it was black or green or maybe even red.
You might find a recent post on my blog fun. It looks at and pokes a bit of fun at several car color related studies. What Your Car Color Reveals About Your Psyche
CWG says: i think it that for some people the car/color theory doesn’t work because they don’t actually buy the color car they want. some people just buy what is available and in their price range, some people don’t want to wait for the specific color to come in, etc.
Hi CWG,
yes I have a UK keyboard, but I think you can use: alt 156 £ yep just did it …that works!
(i.e. hold down the alt key while typing 156 on the right hand number pad)
CWG says: i must google (or CUIL?!?!) an image of a uk keyboard at once!
..oh and our £ sign is shifted top 3 key, which does show a £ (the $ is on the 4 key)
CWG says: perhaps i should do a post on keyboards abroad?!
it’s interesting to me.
I have a gold car and the description is accurate – I view myself as intelligent and I do love comfort, but I just don’t blindly spend my money. I like quality and value mingled together.
CWG says: gold-colored car drivers always seem to be practical people…which is why i have a red car.
hee hee
LOL..my hubby just reorganized ours..
I SHOULD lend him out!
