The Fit’s been making a baaaad noise recently. Initially, I tried pretending that the screeching was coming from another car–my car is new(ish)! On my ride home last night there could be no more denying that my car was the one making the horrid sounds. Now I’m no mechanic, but the acrid smoke pluming from under the hood may also have been a bad sign.
Since dear daddy-o is out of commission with the illness, I was forced to throw myself at the mercy of the brigand mechanic down the street. I left my car in the ‘night owl’ lot with a note asking for a call in the morning with a diagnosis. In the interim, I’m plotting which banks to hit on my heist to procure funds for the mechanic’s bill.
Is it only me, or does everyone feel apprehensive when dealing with automotive repairs? I feel robbed of my senses when dealing with mechanics. I can see their mouths moving and watch their hands blithely writing up bills for enormous sums of money, but I remain rooted to the spot, unable to issue forth any response. I’m scared. Send help.
PS. Just jokin’ about the plumes of smoke…but there was a faintly noxious odor wafting in from the engine area.
UPDATE: It was just my brake pads–the “chirpers” were warning me to replace the brakes, so I did. Yay! Nothing major!

I found your site on Google and read a few of your other entires. Nice Stuff. I’m looking forward to reading more from you.
Mechanics can smell fear – even over the phone. Pretend you’re only sending it to them for a second opinion and keep repeating, “that’s not what the other mechanic said” until they crack and tell you what’s really wrong.
CWG says: excellent suggestion! now…how about when i have to deal with the guy who’s laying the tile in my foyer? any suggestions there?
Stupid mechanics playing the “supreme knowledge” card.
They assume you’re clueless when it comes to your vehicle, don’t let on!
CWG says: i didn’t! i wrote some long-ass note and said things like, “don’t use the OBD to figure out why the check engine light is on–i know it’s on because i need an oil change.” (obd is an little computer ‘onboard diagnostic’ that you plug in to the car and it tells you why the check engine light is on. my dad has one and i know how to use it!)
“Is it only me, or does everyone feel apprehensive when dealing with automotive repairs?”
I actually FINALLY managed to find an honest mechanic. He’s also old school which means he isn’t completely dependent on those stupid sensor readings.
DAUNTLESS TRANSMISSION IN RALEIGH (Gil and his son) ARE THE MOST AWESOME MECHANICS I HAVE EVER HAD. I WOULD GIVE THEM MY FIRST BORN.
CWG says: next time i’m in raleigh to visit my cousins, i’ll have to stop by and say hi to gil.
I feel your pain. Just a few months ago, I went in for an OIL CHANGE and to check on a possible leak. I was told I had the wrong oil in it. I was told to use “XYZ” oil for my car instead, so I did and had the leak fixed elsewhere.
Just this week (not even 3000 miles later) the oil light comes on, and I check the stick. It’s dry! But there’s no oil where I park, so I don’t know what’s going on, but the guy said I might be burning oil…. WHAT?!
Is the Fit no longer under warranty? Even though my car is 8 years young, I have some things that fall under the warranty so I don’t have to pay anything.
CWG says: ha! i drove my car out of the 36,000 mile warranty in the first year. the car does have a 100k drive train warranty…but i know my problem would never be under warranty. so, did you car get fixed?
I did muse a while ago why they didn’t call it the Honda Conniption…
My advice: don’t let them talk you into buying blinker fluid, and if they do, there’s no difference between left and right blink fluid. Okay?
As for mechanics, I’ve never used it, but the Car Talk guys (Tom & Ray Magliozzi) have a section on their website:
CWG says: there you go again with the GIANT quote. love it! as for the name ‘fit’…i think it’s because my car FITS into every parking spot–seriously. i think i could park head-on in a long-ways parking spot with no problem! i’m off to check out your link. thx, panny.
Finding an honest repairman is a monumental task. Luckily, I found one, but he’s down South and too far for you to use!
CWG says: that’s it. i’m movng south. you guys have fried chicken, mac & cheese, southern hospitality, AND honest mechanics. i’m packing my boxes now.
Eh, make it sound like you know what you are talking about. If they recommend something that seems too high, take it to another place.
we are at our mechanic’s mercy. i will hold happy thoughts that it’s nothing too serious.
and hopefully you won’t have to do anything illegal to get your car back.
The sound could be from a belt slipping on a pulley because bearings are starting to wear out on one of the engine components (i.e. starter, air conditioning compressor, alternator, water pump or power steering pump). If it’s not that- then- mmmm- let me think…is your cat missing? Nay just kidding- good luck with your car. Let us know how it turns out.
It’s at times like this, I wish *somewhat* I was a man ! LOL
I’m not sure if the car is “fixed” or not, but more oil was added and it doesn’t leak, so I’m hoping it was just a fluke.
I would suggest that you take your Fit to an official Honda dealer. Might be a little less motive for them to jack up the prices for no reason.
You must always seek friends in two professions.
1. Heating and Air Conditioning
2. Auto Mechanics
I am not saying you should take advantage of these people, but they do offer valuable advice in an emergency. Not that being friends with someone who works at Taco Bell is bad, but would you rather have some auto advice or a free soft taco?
I hate dealing with mechanics mostly becuase of what they charge!
Glad to hear you got your car back safely.. I feel your pain.
