Every morning at school, I enjoy a colorful and nutritious breakfast of cereal or oatmeal. I buy the mini-boxes of cereal from Costco which provide me with my daily allowance of sugary flakes and/or brightly hued Os. Maybe you’ve eaten those little cereal boxes–you know, the ones with the perforations on one side of the box?
Friends, those perforation lines are there for a reason! As a young brownie on a camping trip I learned that you can break open the box along the perforation lines and pour the milk into the plastic cereal bag, eliminating the need for a bowl!!!
At least once a week, a student will pop into my office as I’m eating my cereal from the box. This practice never fails to bring a smile to the face of even the most sullen teenager. They look at me with renewed interest and respect–like I’m cool in a ’MacGyver’ sort of way.
So I just want to say ‘thanks’ to the cereal people for keeping the perforations on the mini-cereal boxes because it keeps me young and hip in the eyes of the young. And I’ll pass this tidbit along to you–whip this little trick out in front of your kids and you’ll be a hero! Or did you already know about this?!

Hah, I remember it too, but I haven’t eaten from the little box kind of cereal in a very long time.
OMG!
My grandparents are in Battle Creek, Michigan (more commonly known as “Ceral City”) and used to ALWAYS buy those little boxes for me when MomandDad dropped me off for a week!
I felt SO COOL eating out of the box, although the sugar that had fallen off the flakes was a bit thick at the bottom… and how are you supposed to get that last lick of milk from the plastic bag?!
(I have a box of Frankenberry in my cupboard and I think it wants me to eat it for dinner tomorrow… what’s that Franken? Yes dear, I’m coming…)
@ Bouncy – HAHAHAHHAH! Don’t let your hubs get too jealous.. your anniversary is coming up!
I remember these boxes. It was always such a TREAT to get sugar cereal. My mom was not a supporter of the stuff, but we’d get these mini boxes occasionally. I remember sitting in front of the TV Saturday morning, watching the Smurfs or Scooby Doo and eating them out of the packet. Kind of messy, but fun.
PS: HAVE YOU BEEN TALKING TO MY DAUGHTERS?? We shelled out a bucketload on brunch Sun morn (yes that would be the same meal which gave John food poisoning) and all the girls wanted to eat were the mini-boxes of lucky charms and golden grahams. In retrospect, probably a wise (though expensive) choice.
I was a brownie and a girl scout and it has probably been that long since I’ve eaten out of the boxes! Hmmmm…Captain Crunch here I come……..

!!!!
We had a Christmas tradition in my house. We would get the variety and someone would have to choose whether to go first or second. Whoever went first had one choice, but whoever went second had TWO CHOICES for their first pick.
It was always a delicate balancing act because I wanted Coco Crispies, Frosted Flakes, AND Fruit Loops. I usually could only get two of the ones I wanted. Sean always ended up with Apple Jack’s but I think he actually liked those. To this day, I have never had a bowl of Apple Jacks.
we would eat those boxes of cereal on vacations. i remember staying at the surfer hotel on the beach in san diego and our room had a kitchenette. we would eat our cereal in the boxes. loved it. we would fight over the sugar pops and the raisin bran was always left to the end.
Just remembering camping with the scouts and eating cereal out of the box brought a smile to my face! Thank you!
This was a camping/vacation breakfast for us for years…unless the milk was spoiled!
You mean I’ve been carefully opening the tops of little milk cartons and pouring in a serving from a big box of cereal all these years for no good reason?
Ha!
Next you’ll tell me that it should be eaten with a spoon instead an heirloom clamshell.
I almost never eat cereal, and honestly, I had no idea that you could do that. What an amazing idea! I really need to catch up on the goings-on in the cereal world.
Hayden: That’s a great idea! I’m going to use that with my girls. It should be interesting to see what they choose.
If you want the kids to think you’re the coolest person ever, you should eat out of a big cereal box. Take a letter opener and cut the thing open. They will have nothing but respect for you after seeing that. Then, you could toss the prize inside at them from across the room.
